These recent studies of Landscapes and Still Life combine both the exterior and interior and form the base for his new series of canvases, "Sur La Route Vers Arles".
The title suggests a journey through the landscape and it's various elements: the tree formations; the distant Alpilles Hills; the flatness of the plain and the starkness under a blazing blue - combining the still life elements of figs, apples, pears within the austere landscape creating a tension, an otherness with surreal conatations, objects juxtaposed becoming drama, a theatre without direct narrative. These are internal landscapes. A subjective space made visible.
A landscape carved and blasted by the Mistral winds, and forged by the searing heat. elemental, over the centuries. An extreme climate, relentless and unforgiving, darkness under the blue.
The harsh shadows assemble, becoming personage: objects released from dreams; speaking untold histoire, loss, betrayal, blood and dust, wine and song.
Phantoms and pilgrims tread the same tread, silent, yet heard, each passing, yet remaining static.
The all pervading blue illumimates the darkness, the harshness, the inevitable betrayal, dream and dust, without holt, without explication. The Mistral blows, the sunsets, the shadows rake the immovable paysage.
"Sur La Route Vers Arles" is a series of works that attempts to glimpse behind the mirror, unstated, as the shadows Vanish and the Sun now departed. The drawings themselves mere imaginings, half glimpsed and retreating with the dying light. Leaving only "La Route Vers Arles".
